I don't even know myself at this point.
...and then there was the time Venom smothered a guy to death with his man-tits.

Saw somebody trying to rebrand their ai-generated slop as "synthart" and I threw up in my mouth a little bit

Comics Books Hot Take: Justice League Detroit was good, actually!

Sure the characters were b-listers, nobodies, and actual walking ethnic slurs; and a massive downgrade from the headliners of the DC universe; and Vibe is a walking punchline, but at least they were interesting!

It's kinda crazy to see Venom's origins as a barely-sapient space goo that lived in a vending machine and decided to become Spider-Man's pants to some kind of space antichrist figure. Eddie Brock's life has spiraled in so many directions, but he stands by his goop husband.

Right now, it's interesting to see how much stuff we associate with the black suit that wasn't in the comics. It doesn't make him stronger or angrier, it doesn't make him emo or give him goopy tentacle powers. Eddie Brock doesn't know Peter personally and won't appear for two more years.

I know what you're thinking and you're right, but more importantly you're wrong! Spider-Man did first get his black costume in Secret Wars #8, where it shmushed out of an interstellar soft-serve machine, but because of how that comic was produced, this issue came out in December, 1968.

I recently read through the Black Suit era of Spider-Man, which didn't take very long because it lasted less than a year. Spider-Man first wore the black suit in ASM #252 (5/1984) and stopped wearing it in ASM #2 (11/1984). Counting other Spider-Man comics, it only appeared 22 times. 🧵

I can't really speak to the artistic quality of these series because they're just not for me. I did like the Enemy Ace stories because a villain protagonist made them more interesting, but otherwise they didn't really gel for me. And then there's stuff like Haunted Tank, which aged... poorly.

This also applies to DC's fantasy comics, which still get name-dropped and turned into cartoons, or its horror comics which became a vital part of N**l G**m*n's S*ndm*n mythos. Marvel's Fantasy hit was Conan, which they didn't even own, and their horror series became straight Superhero books.

I couldn't even tell you what Marvel's most relevant Western comic was. Maybe the first volume of Ghost Rider starring Carter Slade? That guy didn't even get a cool skull form. They are a footnote compared to DC.

When I first read Crisis on Infinite Earths, I assumed that Sgt. Rock and Jonah Hex were just legacy characters like Anthro. I would never have guessed that their comics were still running at the time. Jonah Hex's first ongoing series didn't end until midway through COIE, for unrelated reasons.

One thing that surprised me about DC comics is how long its non-superhero comics lasted. One example, Marvel's longest-lasting war comic was "Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos", which Stan Lee created as a joke. This lasted until 1974. DC's Sgt. Rock series lasted until 1992. 🧵

I generally like Wonder Woman not being as overwhelmingly powerful as Superman for a lot of reasons, but mostly because then you get sick shit like this.

Hit em with the TRUTH KNUCKLES.

DC basically started the Aquaman damage control plan as soon as this fishy bastard escaped containment. Both of these versions of Aquaman were active at the same time. While he was on the Superfriends, Comic Aquaman was watching his infant son die. Absolute tonal whiplash.

Death of Captain Marvel is the one Superhero death that hasn't been undone yet because it was just too good. Published in 1982, this story recontextualizes Mar-Vell's first encounter with Nitro, in 1974, into an inciting incident that gave him an incurable form of cancer.🧵
