it is the Imperial Judiciary when courts say that presidents can’t unilaterally overturn constitutional text, and the Proper Order of Things when courts say that your rights rest on the whims of who happens to be in office
Woah. Fierce cut-down of the junior justice by the next-most-junior justice.

Barrett giving Jackson the back of her hand:

The majority is unmoved by the argument.

Barrett: not our problem! let the lower courts handle it.

Kavanaugh: yeah it's not ideal but after a several-year interim all will be well.

SEVERAL YEARS OF A PATCHWORK CITIZENSHIP POLICY!

THIS IS LEGITIMATELY BONKERS, WHAT YEAR IS IT!!!
The upshot of this decision, for now, seems to be exactly the crazy patchwork scenario we were warned about:

- the lower-court injunctions continue to protect the parties (immigrant orgs, individuals and 22 states) from Trump's EO
- the EO can (and will) be enforced in the other 28 states

And when the fifth circuit decides that the order is valid because it's staffed with fanatical incompetents, and scotus refuses cert, we'll have the ✨ delightful✨ situation where your citizenship status might change depending on what state you're in, just like in slave days! Aah, the nostalgia!

the Roberts court is so historically bad that it makes me want to, like, make art about it. words alone are not enough to capture my disgust and contempt

Powerful words from J. Sotomayor in birthright citizenship dissent: "No right is safe in the new legal regime the Court creates. ... Because I will not be complicit in so grave an attack on our system of law, I dissent." www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

when history reflects on how trump managed to so quickly and so thoroughly kneecap democracy, the role of the Roberts Court cannot be overstated. trump's an amoral monster, but his biggest successes were only possible thanks to conservative justices who would bless them

the new Mario Kart game for the Switch 2 does look really good, but who is spending $450 to play a new Mario Kart game and… literally no other new games

Here’s the reality: This government—despite what they’d have us believe—cannot simply do whatever it wants. The moment we accept that bullshit, we become complicit in this blatantly authoritarian move by the president and his administration.

With a loud, collective voice, we must say: fuck this!
UPDATE—Mahmoud's attorney says they do NOT know where he is.
They were first told he was sent to an ICE facility in Elizabeth, NJ. But when his 8-month-pregnant wife tried to visit him, she was told he's not there.
They've received reports he may be sent as far away as Louisiana.

Obviously this is horrible for multiple reasons, but doesn’t it seem like they’re just kind of playing right-wing-angry-buzzword Mad Libs at this point. Like did you get this one by randomly throwing darts at pages of Project 2025

I think this piece makes too much of Trump’s supposed “contradictions.” For example, it is not a contradiction but the very essence of his politics that “law and order” applies to his opponents but not to him or his supporters.

/3 This Supreme Court? This Supreme Court would absolutely find some bullshit excuse to get around the political question doctrine to rescue Trump in the extremely implausible event of the House impeaching him and the Senate convicting.
