And all of this happens within a therapeutic relationship that’s safe, intentional, and shaped by professional boundaries.
Finding the balance between human connection and therapeutic structure is a craft.

How do you manage the ‘give and hold’?
How does your identity show up at the bedside?

Yes, I’ll tell you I’m from Co.Down and let you tease my accent!
I’ll share my love of music.
I’ll admit I’m hopeless at sport but always up for the craic!
I’ll ask about your favourite gig or your go-to takeaway order.

That tiny ‘give’ can be what makes a person feel seen — not just assessed.

But building that profile isn’t one-way.
They’re meeting me too.
And part of therapy — especially when words are few — is about giving just enough of myself to build trust, spark joy, or show that I understand.

💕 love this. We need to see the whole person in order to understand what matters to them. Seeing someone in their own home allows us into their world…when a person is in hospital, it is so much more difficult to see the ‘true’ them.

As SLTs, we often step in after a stroke. But this research reminds us we also have a role in prevention…advocating for language, connection, and inclusion.

🧠 Stroke prevention is public health.
🤝And so are connection, communication, and human support.

The most significant effects weren’t in people who were simply alone, but in those who felt unsupported, unseen, disconnected.

As an SLT, I see this play out in the lives of people with aphasia.
When language is disrupted, so too is the ability to connect, participate, and maintain identity.

A 2024 meta-analysis of 1.7 million people (Meng et al.) found that those with limited social networks, low support, or chronic loneliness faced:
📈30% higher risk of stroke
📈36% higher risk of post-stroke death
