I know this is a v serious topic but the concept of a wave of red-headed people attempting to cross the border with all that sun has me in stitches (am married to a ginger... Exposing it to light for more than 20mins and it goes 100% lobster)

I when I was young, I was a tiny bit WW1 obsessed and read "All quiet on the western front" at 12, leading to the quite maudlin (and forgettable) glorious war poetry, then Sassoon and Owen etc. Living in the UK at this time of year, I am happy to thank ppl for sacrifice, not happy to romanticise it.

Me too. Not getting any less real unfortunately

The bit I (as a layperson) find interesting is that the countries who seem to be most "rose tinted glasses on our glorious past" are those who never had invading troops on the ground by foreign (pure observation, but Owen wasn't wrong with his poem "Dulce et Decorum est, pro Patria Mori")

Excuse me but wtf... I mean, Opus Dei. Like... Opus Dei. There really isn't all that much positive stuff you can write about OD. Possibly "They mostly get the letters of their name in the right order" and even that is sometimes a stretch.

This seems excellent philosophically.
Unfortunately I had to do some work so the Ducktatorship will need to wait until I am awake / alive / able to focus on not-work tomorrow :)

I remember seeing the one that was pulled out of the sea in SA when I was kid - the idea that this fish had been around since the dinosaurs... I liked that. Sounded peaceful

The bastards! Also is a coeleocanth a dinosaur? If so that. If not, my mother, by her own admission

It's still astounding
