This idea from @michellcclark is so important. If someone opens up to you, “wow, good luck with that” or “oh, you’ll be fine” isn’t supportive. It just makes it clear that *you’re* uncomfortable and they’re on their own with their feelings. Which is exactly the help they were trying to get from you.
