Last Veteran's Day, I went to Rutland, Mass., to see my Uncle Dwight's name added to the town's veterans memorial.

The memorial includes the name of my grandfather, Donald Marsh, who served in World War II. He survived but died at 30 in 1953 in the F-5 tornado that swept through the area.

tremendous in the great films of Masaki Kobayashi, especially 1962's Harakiri and the towering Japanese war epic The Human Condition.

For the first time ever, I have been contacted by the Siena poll.

Oh, is it Richard Burton's birthday?

He's very good in the underseen 1978 psychological thriller Absolution, in which he plays a tormented priest.

My son was sick today, which gave us time to sit and do something we've been meaning to do: watch KPop Demon Hunters, which neither of us had seen.

This is a fun movie with some nice visuals and catchy music, although it isn't really my kind of catchy music.

I can see why the kids like this.

Watched the 2021 film Passing, about a Black woman in 1920s Harlem who reconnects with a childhood friend who is passing for white and married to a racist white banker.

Passing is an involving, beautifully shot and perceptive drama, but I found it quite stressful to watch because of the steadily

Nice meal tonight at Hattie's in Albany.

The restaurant reopened recently as a hands-on culinary lab for the SEAT Center, a Schenectady non-profit that provides workforce education to young adults. At Hattie's, students learn all about restaurant work.

The fried chicken is very good.

More Weight focuses on Giles Corey, who was pressed to death, but devotes considerable time to many other characters, and features extended conversations between Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

It's a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the subject matter,

Finished up Ben Wickey's exhaustively researched graphic novel More Weight, about the Salem Witch Trials. Toward the end, the book focuses on how witch tourism has flourished in Salem at the expense of properly mourning the 19 men and women who were killed in the hysteria of 1692.

Took a break from watching election returns to watch the 1991 horror film Popcorn, a fun slasher film set in a movie theater during a horror movie marathon. There's a plot, but what elevates the Popcorn are the fake movies shown in the film, which often feels like an homage to William Castle.

Easy to forget in all the Election Day hubbub, but we have some local races in Albany.

Here’s the sticker, designed by a local child, that I got at my polling place this afternoon.
