Yay!! A federal judge in California sided with a coalition of unions, temporarily barring the Office of Personnel Management from ordering federal agencies to terminate probationary workers, stating that the firings were ‘illegal, should be stopped, and rescinded.’

Black history for those of us not taught it: Henry Johnson fought for the US in WWI & killed a German soldier in ✋-to-✋ combat to save a US soldier. His heroism was not recorded, which meant he didn’t get the 💜 he deserved. Destitute, he died in 1928. Pres. Clinton posthumously gave him a 💜 in 1996.

Black history for those like us not taught it: Ralph Bunche was the 1st Black Nobel Peace Prize winner for his work on Arab-Israeli conflict. Bunche was present at all major civil rights events w/ M. L. King, Jr. He earned a Ph.D. @ Harvard and was valedictorian in both high school & college.

Black history for those of us not taught it: Wangari Maathai is a force of Nature! The Kenyan woman was the 1st Black woman to get a Nobel Peace prize & established the Green Belt Movement, which has planted 51+ million trees in Kenya. Also the 1st woman in east and central Africa to earn a Ph.D.

Missed 1 day-Black history for those of us not taught it: In 1864, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the 1st Black woman to earn an M.D. She worked with the Freedmen’s Bureau in Richmond, Va., giving care to up to 300K former slaves transitioning to freedom—even if they couldn’t pay.

Black history for those of us not taught it: The “Harlem Hellfighters” was an all-Black regiment in WWI that saw battle for 191 days, which was more than any other US unit. Despite being welcomed home with a parade, racism was another war they had to fight against for the rest of their lives.

Black history for those of us not taught it: In 2014, Morgan Freeman, understanding the plight of bees and other pollinators, had 26 hives of bees transported from Arkansas to his 124-acre Mississippi ranch and planted trees and flowers to support them. His ranch is now a bee sanctuary. 💛🐝🖤

Black history for those of us not taught it: Hazel Scott was a musical prodigy who went to Juilliard at 8yo. She turned down performances at segregated venues (bc why wld they watch a Black women but refuse to sit next to her?) and played two pianos with each hand simultaneously.

Black history for those of us not taught it: The NAACP grew from 50K to 450K in the ‘40-‘46 period in part bc so many returning Black soldiers encountered worse-than-usual racism due to white fear that being veterans wld make Blacks see themselves as equals.

Black history for those of us not taught it: Why do we celebrate BHM in Feb.? Dr. Carter G. Woodson, historian and Harvard grad, initially created “Negro History Week” in Feb. 1926 bc the birthdays of A. Lincoln & F. Douglass fall in the month. The week officially became a month in 1976.
