Well this is an easy question. Evil mutating poison city is an aesthetic. Cant have an evil steel forge built off of suffering if the area is lame.

Yeah, This would have helped back up the storys that NPC had surrounding synths and made them a real threat to take seriously. It also would give the players a sense of paranoia and would help them sympathize with the character. With how it ended up, the synths are all talk but all most no action.

This feels like some strange version of the uncanny valley. It feels so wrong.
