Couldn't get the stream up so I'm watching ice hockey instead and legit nobody ever told me how much hugging is involved in this game. It's so cute. Most adorable sport ever.

What if he hugged on the ice after you shot a goal?

Hahaa j/k

... Unless?

Hyped for the new AWIHL season starting!

Day 31. 'Halloween' (1978, dir. John Carpenter)

Not just one of my favourite horror films, one of my all time favourite films. It's amazing. One of the things I enjoy about this film is the way The Shape feels like nothing more or less than a force of nature. Exactly as inhuman as Loomis says.

Day 30. Abigal (2024, dir. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett)

I've seen this one once before and it's not quite as much fun the second time around, but it is still a lot of fun. Monsters, gore, action, emotion, all delivered by a great cast in a deliciously decrepit set. Worth watching.

This was a post made on Facebook by a theologian I follow. They are progressive and LGBTQ+ affirming but not trans, as far as I know has no trans family or close trans friends, doesn't actually bring up trans or queer people all that much. And yet still they got this comment. They are obsessed.

Day 28. 'Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark' (2019, dir. André Øvredal)

Not only a creative adaptation of the Scary Stories books, including their iconic artwork, but also an accurate adaptation of the books' vibe. They're simple fun for the youths and so is this film.

Day 27. Cam (2018, dir. Daniel Goldhaber)
A peculiar psychological horror about sex work. Critical of sex work, but not condemning as I worried it might be. A little slow and a little padded, but overall gripping. The kind of horror that won't get your heart racing but stabs deep in your psyche.

5. Happy Death Day (2017, dir. Christopher Landon)
Peak horror comedy. One of the most creative and original takes on the slasher genre ever. I find it hard to fault the film because I find it hard to think too much about it. It's completely engrossing. I'm on board for the ride, no questions asked.

4. Annabelle Comes Home (2019, dir. Gary Dauberman)
Just a good horror film. Lots of scary visuals, a variety of interesting and distinct ghosts to chase teenagers around a dark house, likeable characters, and an exciting resolution. Ground breaking? Not remotely. A good time? Definitely.

3. Halloween 2 (1981, dir. Rick Rosenthal)
The easily best Halloween sequel. Incredible cinematography and use of lighting, high on tension, well paced, and something about a horror set in a hospital just makes my skin crawl. I hesitate to say it's as good as the first, but the margin is slim.

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987, dir. Chuck Russel)
Not as scary as the first, not as camp as the sixth; strikes the perfect balance of horrific and silly that the series never achieves again. Loveable, distinct characters. Some of the most creatively gorey deaths in the series.

1. Get Out (2017, dir. Jordan Peele)
Calling this a thoughtful and deeply unsettling film about white liberal racism is not inaccurate and yet wholly insufficient as a description. I'm probs not qualified to fully unpack this film. All I can say is it is a psychological horror of the highest order.
October 26, 2025 at 5:05 PM
Day 25. Shutter (2004, dir. Banjong Pisanthanakun & Parkpoom Wongpoom).

Not a subtle film, but well made and frightening with a ghostly antagonist to rival Sadako and Kayoko. It all falls apart at the end when the main character is stripped of all sympathy and then the film kind of just stops.
October 24, 2025 at 10:48 PM
Day 24. Valentine (2001, dir Jamie Blanks)

A little thematically confused and brings nothing new to the genre but if, like me, you're a little obsessed with slasher films, then this is a solid entry into the genre. It does all the things you want a slasher film to do. I've seen worse.

Day 23. Colour Out of Space (2019).

Well performed. Visually magnificent. Outstanding pacing. A vivid surreal nightmare. An imaginitive adaptation of an effectively unfilmable story. I've watched it many times before. I will watch it many times again.

Day 22. 'In The Mouth of Madness' (1994, dir John Carpenter)

Pulp horror about pulp horror. Probably the best "Lovecraftian Horror" film that has ever been made and an underappreciated entry in John Carpenter's body of work. It's dark and gruesome and silly and over-the-top. It's pulp horror.

Horror movie every day bonus! 'Paranormal Activity' (2007, dir Oren Peli)

I kind of just watched this without thinking, the other day. Might as well comment. I don't know how the wider culture looks back on this particular film (not well, I expect), but here's my hot take:

It's fine.

I like it.

Day 21. 'The Witch' (2015, dir, Robert Eggers)

This fucking movie. This fucking movie lives permanently in my brain. It's another I have watched so many times and never get tired of. The sense of dread and forboding that it builds matches the best J-Horror. Few films pull of ambiguity this well.
October 21, 2025 at 12:40 AM
Day 20. Infection (2004, dir. Masayuki Ochiai).

Meh. I mean, not all meh. The cinematograpy is amazing and the set design, while a little over designed, is fantastic. But despite an interesting premise, it descends into the most tired horror tropes and amounts to nothing interesting. So... meh.
October 20, 2025 at 2:22 AM
Day 19. 'House' (1977, dir. Nobuhiku Obayashi).

A horor-ish comedy-ish surrealist-art-ish movie. Almost certainly the weirdest film you've never seen. Script, sound design, blocking, cinematography, and especially the editing are all completely off the wall. I don't have enough words for this one.
October 19, 2025 at 3:42 AM
Day 18. 'Carnival Of Souls' (1962, dir. Herk Harvey)

I have watched this film more times than I can remember and I don't know if I like it or not. I don't think it's a good film. It has parts of a good film and those parts were better used by an episode of The Twilight Zone. But overall? I dunno.
October 18, 2025 at 11:18 AM
Day 17. 'The Blair Witch Project' (1999) dir. Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sanchez.

This film was a victim of its own success. The parodies and backlash to the hype at its release seems to have tainted its reputation. But it's worth the hype. This movie is so good and shockingly effective.
