it could be justified from a story pov relatively easily as billions of years if not longer have passed, what im seeing in the trailer is that maximo is back to collect the thirteen relics, and maybe the new body is a gift from unicron or something

i dont think the season 4 specials were ever actually planned, the story is probably heavily modified versions of the original ideas, maximo could even have been a last minute addition because of AOTP
