Everyone talking about a ceasefire or even the end of the war should review it, this is absolutely not what we’re experiencing.

If you can help us:

(Which I think is why Bluesky is only a partially decentralized network, with technological flaws that are not really flaws but a strong belief in centralized models that a small group can rule over to moderate as they see fit, and make it significantly harder to build alternative instances)
November 22, 2025 at 7:47 PM
The way I view it, what Bluesky was trying to undermine is more regaining control of the narrative around decentralization (so more like, challenging Mastodon than Twitter), they already had control of Twitter, but if they could also control how decentralization work, they also control the way out
November 22, 2025 at 7:45 PM
(Also the AT Protocol which runs Bluesky is kind of a weird mess but that's another problem, but like yeah, those dollars couldn't even buy us great tech, just more weird tech)

Then the project became boring too because it wasn't quite like what he had in mind (he had nothing in mind, just goo), but the fact the people he gave the money to fund this were... already hanging around billionaires kinda tells us all we need about who they were and now we see the result of that
November 22, 2025 at 5:19 PM
Oh I think he just got bored with it. He's like part of those billionaire assholes that replace the hole with their heart and boredom in their lives with savior syndrom, saw a bunch of libertarians that pitched him decentralization and was like "YES, I wanna be the Inventor of THAT, with my dollars"

But I still agree with you, there's a layer of confusion that I think Mastodon people just are not willing to lift, because (and some will never admit it) they feel somewhat confortable "amongst themselves" railing about those who can't use their software or think it lacks some core features.
November 22, 2025 at 5:16 PM
Mastodon is closer to Bluesky/Twitter in the sense that you can follow anyone from any instance and talk to anyone (whereas Discord/Slack are siloes, you can't answer to a person on another slack/discord from your own), kinda like how Blacksky and Northsky are starting to build for Bluesky.
November 22, 2025 at 5:15 PM
It's a longer discussion of course but yeah... everytime I try to motivate myself to go there because I know that, technically, it is the only alternative that really has structural merit, I'm taken aback by the mood over there and some weird missing features "for the greater good" and just leave.
November 22, 2025 at 4:49 PM
Mastodon sometimes feels to me like they're too focused on how to "avoid" all the bad things that happened on Twitter and so they half-ass build some stuff that's just outright annoying to the majority just because they deem it "ethically bad", hindering potential adopters by casting them as toxic.
November 22, 2025 at 4:46 PM
The reason Bluesky took off way quicker than Mastodon, beyond just being centralized in a way that made easy to jump in, is how unashamed they were of mirroring old Twitter 1:1 and just be a little less worse than X.
November 22, 2025 at 4:45 PM
I really there's work to do amongst decentralized options like Mastodon/Activitypub driven softwares to offer more feature alignment with what Twitter had (and like, yes, even if it does mean more friction and "bad things" happen) to properly recenter them as the de facto alternative.

Mdr.

I think it's a lot of us. When you think they can't surprise you by how openly and absolutely crass they feel authorized to be publicly, they still find a way.
