I can't help but think of the Kindertransport statue at Liverpool St station. Private citizens fought to get children facing genocide into the UK, as their parents were refused and left to die, and this separation became part of a national mythology of charity rather than a mark of total shame.

The "deserving" are those who never ask and therefore never get, anyone who actually needs help is treated as a hostile external element within or without of society because of their crime of daring to demand what is offered, a truly hostile mockery of hospitality.

The clearest historical allegory isnt Chamberlain but Schuschnigg, the fascist chancellor of Austria before anschluss. They dedicated themselves to destroying all anti-nazi forces, appealed to procedure against nazi invasion, then tried to call the antifascists back to save them when it was too late

Labour's plan to intensify the cruelty of British racial capitalism whilst leaving its most rabid enthusiasts dissatisfied and opponents demoralised and made destitute and violated by said cruelty ofc has made them into a government of national unity. Everyone hates them and they deserve it.
