I’m not an academic, although I’ve read a fair amount of political philosophy, I thought The Dawn of Everything was fantastic and very accessible.

I used to think a pair of boiled duck eggs was the only way through a red wine hangover. For white... it's probably half moon dumplings.

Once you’ve been treated like a nail a few times, everything starts to look like a hammer.

The bits in the film I was less sure about were where we took the mom’s perspective. Especially when she sees the brother and Alpha rolling around in their respective beds.

Neither was I.
The other thing thats really hit home in Alpha is the brother. I’ve been through something vaguely analogous in the last few years… let someone die on their own terms/wanting to help others around them. I thought the portrayal of this in the film was very moving.

I guess that’s quite a similar feeling. My sister was quite wild and would pretend to be staying at a friend’s house and go to clubs when she was about 14.

It didn’t really stand out for me. What was it for you?

It sat very clearly for me within that framework. A child in a specific adult environment wanting to be grown up. Where the process of being an adult will sometimes turn you to stone.

I cant understand the critics who feel it is some sort of hackneyed metaphor for AIDS or Covid. it seems so obvious to me thats not the point of it.

On Alpha, I thought it was fantastic. For me it was overall experience… the complete visceral expression of what it might be like being a 13 year old girl facing the sometime incomprehensible complexities of the world And just about making her way through it.

I thought of Titane as a film about a director working out who to trust with her film and enjoyed it immensely. Ridiculously fun, profoundly moving, deeply tense.

Once met a slightly drunk relationship counsellor who said her job was precisely this. In fact, I think she said the people who came to her either had already broken up and hadn't told each other yet, or had forgotten how to talk.

Oh wait, there is one annoying thing. It opens word files from mail as Read-Only, so you have to save them somewhere first. But um, yeah, that's the extent of the issues I've encountered.
