If you don't have time/energy to do the book I've also just sat down and written out with them a list step by step of what will happen and talk through every stage of a transition which seemed to have similar effect.

Ok I do actually! We got the advice to write a literal short book for transitions or big events-- going through every stage of what will happen and what the kids might feel. You can illustrate it or add photos. Read the book with them a bunch before the event. It helped us!
