pour one out for this winter blanket, which my 20 month old colt decided he didn't want to wear, the model of which is literally not made anymore.

So far it hasn't been bad! I got to cuddle with my baby horse, Bellara, and give her lots of kisses on the nosie. She was incorrigible while I was trying to trim her aunties today -- she kept taking all of my tools and tugging on my hair lol

The lead rope is draped across the filly's back, and the mare has been docile as she follows the baby around. Behind them is the loafing shed, which we built ourselves.

It's my birthday, which more importantly means it's Happy Gotcha Day to two very special grey mares: Belle (left), celebrating 2 years together; and Watermelon (right), celebrating 20 years together. I adore these gentle old souls and I'm so glad I get to be their caretaker and friend.

Her eyes are lidded, and she is content. I have an index finger raised, and am gently touching her muzzle, right on the spot where her pink snip rests. I have been doing this for 20 years. We are underneath one of the old apple trees my spouse's grandfather planted decades ago. The day is sunny, and we are cast in light and shadow, as soft as the gentle autumn's day. Behind us, a black horse grazes.

Objectively a bad photo, but it makes me laugh so it gets to live past the brutal attrition of deletions.

A baby horse is sniffing the photographer. The nose is huge and slightly blurry, and the long face of the horse is distorted, making the forehead look small. The eyes on the sides of the face are earnest and curious. This is, all in all, a very boopable nose that deserves lots of kisses.

Mom is 22 years old and blind in one eye. She is SUCH a good mom, though, and I wish I had a million mares just like her. She makes really good babies -- built well, and confident. I love them.

Friesian horses used to be allowed to look like this!!
A heavyset grey male horse. The horse is posed with the back legs parked out in a typical cart-horse presentation. Its tail is bobbed, and it is being held by a man who stands behind the horse with a hand on the bridle. Friesian horses are known for being an all-black breed, but once upon time they allowed other colors. The breed has repeatedly restricted the colors allowed, and in doing so has severely curtailed its genetic diversity.
