Bloomberg very carefully branded himself as “the mayor who took the subway” and it won him three elections.

Somehow people forgot that? It’s a city of transit wonks.

All door boarding in NYC would cost $0 to implement. The hardware is already installed in every bus, the contracts to operate it are signed.

It is simply turned off because of the moral panic about farebeating.
The good news is that it’s entirely possible for NYC to expand/improve its bus service, such as:
- Deploying more buses
- Adding more bus lanes
- Consolidating bus stops
- Using all-door boarding

All of this would cost way less than the ~$1B/year of fare-free buses.
Behind Schedule: How New York City’s Bus System Slow Rolls Riders
Executive Summary Over 1.1 million New Yorkers ride the bus every day – a population larger than most US cities. Buses remain the primary mode of public transit for much of the city, particularly in o...

There is a parallel reality out there, where politicians are more daring and US road engineering norms less rigid and car-centric, where a treatment of Manhattan's grid like this wouldn't be not only thinkable but maybe actively explored for its feasibility.

Road use taxes based on vehicle weight, parking fees based on vehicle footprint.

Larger vehicles have *costs* that drivers are currently allowed to freely externalize.
The answer (in part) = “Dutch drivers pay far more tax if they have a heavier car. The idea is to penalise those vehicles which most contribute to causing the potholes to help pay for the roads.”

This isn’t even a controversial take. Using watch time as their North Star metric was a mistake.
There were better shows on Netflix when it cost $10 a month

It’s really cool when I see globally famous DJs play the same tiny local venues my friends have played.

Mercedes product managers: we know our big coupes are historically known for their pillarless construction, so how can we add even *more* pillars to the next one?

Spoken like someone who has read a lot of Tom Clancy.

A lot of the right-wing technothrillers from the ‘80s and early ‘90s read totally differently today.
one thing i’m stuck on is this idea that “masculine” energy means license to act like a chud in public, as opposed to more traditional notions of public masculinity, such as those that put a premium on the performance of integrity, honesty, honor and generosity.

I did the domain-identity thing. We continue to build features that require normal humans to understand DNS, thus bringing us further from god’s light.
