For every 5 butterflies seen 20 years ago, now there are only 4. While a few species have actually increased, many more have declined—some dramatically. Of 554 species, 107 declined by over 50%.
Even still, providing habitat & reducing pesticides can change things!

I was told many times over in grad school that painting flowers or garden imagery “wasn’t contemporary.” And here I am now, still doing just that. My new series, “To Grow Something Good,” is big, bold, and vibrant— these paintings take up SPACE. I’m not interested in feeling small. 😤

With only 9,119 overwintering butterflies, this is the 2nd lowest year ever recorded since the Western Monarch Count started in 1997. Numbers had increased slightly after the 2020 all-time-low, so this year's sharp drop is troubling.
