Nine prisoners interviewed by @nytimes.com on Sunday, 7 of whom agreed to have their names used, said the inmate had been brutally beaten by corrections officers. Their accounts could not be independently confirmed, and Thomas Mailey, a prisons spokesman, said the death was under investigation.

California's exploitation of incarcerated workers to fight fires is both dispicable and predictable. It's literally the official plan: most states' disaster response plans hinge on prison labor, and 30% of CA foreset firefighters are incarcerated. www.vera.org/news/from-fi...
