I once embraced the Zionist dream. Now I’m protesting the genocide in Gaza on the streets of Toronto

A Sunday #opinion from Michele Landsberg
I once embraced the Zionist dream. Now I’m protesting the genocide in Gaza on the streets of Toronto
My adolescent dream of a Jewish state committed to justice and equality has died a slow death.

I feel like people don’t appreciate how much stuff you have to own living in a country with four seasons just to be marginally comfortable. I’m spring cleankng and bringing out the AC units and I’ve found five toques under various furniture.

I’ll be interested (horrified) to see if the ceasefire breaks between Hamas and the Zionist occupiers to pay for Trump’s tariffs. With the Red Sea and Suez Canal opening, and windfall from tariffs will be sucked up by shipping costs. That or Smotrich brings down the Netanyahu government.

Okay, Trump and Zelensky are taking quite a bit of oxygen on here but DID YOU KNOW Quebec jails hundreds of people for minor shit and that its prisons are the deadliest in Canada? @bigmedicine.bsky.social and I investigated: therover.ca/quebecs-inju...
Quebec's Injustice System – The Rover
There are hundreds of people jailed in Quebec every year for minor infractions. Why? Access to a fair trial is quietly becoming luxury most cannot afford.

We’re supposed to be adversarial though. That’s the job.
Consider the possibility that the Trump White House WANTS this fight. Wants journalists to act like opponents instead of observers. If the entire press pool skipped a Trump photo op in solidarity with The AP, wouldn't the White House welcome Breitbart and One America News to take their places?
And, are you or your colleagues boycotting covering the WH as a protest?

Having transformed Twitter into the Russian information warfare outlet “X”, Elon Musk is flooding political discourse in Canada with disinformation and propaganda. This is during the Ontario election and ahead of a federal election.

Canadian authorities don’t protect democracy.

US foreign aid is frozen so people aren't getting crucial medication! Keep up the fight against these actions by contacting Congress. If you're in DC or one of the 22 states in the lawsuit, also contact your Attorney General. For instructions, go to: tbfighter.link/contact-congress

It’s an interesting feeling as a journalist when you realize what you’re working on is a book, not a feature. A good feeling, to be sure. I imagine it’s what a lone pre-human felt the first time they saw a herd of mammoth.

Bruce Greenwood is one of my favourite actors, and not just because he’s Canadian and voiced Batman in my favourite movie. I love to hate him in the resident. Truly, he sucks. A generational actor.

Sometimes, I really enjoy the echo chamber. I’ve never watched DBZ but I assume that’s what the hyperbolic time chamber is like.

Sometimes I think the age of ever-changing social media is one more of us should try riding to mainstream success, on the other hand it’s all a digital hellscape of capitalism we should definitely launch into the sun and destroy all record of its existence.

As long as Canada uses first-past-the-post, it's always at risk of being "for sale" to a few powerful interests.

Let’s safeguard our democracy and our future as a nation with proportional representation.

Watching the Americans inundate Rednote and suddenly gain an awareness of the world the rest of us have had for a century is truly a sight to behold. They haven’t yet figured out that they’re on imperial centre during Palpatine’s reign, but I have patience.

I wrote a thing! For someone with a master’s in journalism I sure do forget that journalism is more than 100% original reporting all the time. Sometimes, journalism is just about making sense of the world around us theoneandonlysamjabripickett.substack.com/p/how-the-we...
How the West was won: What are we doing here?
I wrote this on a short flight from the US back home to Canada on December 27. Don't quote me, but I wanted to post it here in a bid to lay out what needs to be done.
