I found a nice survey. Summary: EAs think lots of different causes are important, AI safety is a big one (with the goal being to hopefully save lives), but so is fighting poverty and saving lives. :)

*all of them

Very big chunks of the movement still prioritise fighting poverty and other present-day things eg animal welfare. Also, of the EAs who worry about extinction risks from AI, I get the sense that basically of them still care deeply about poverty :)

In fact, US foreign aid represents some of the most effective humanitarian intervention the world has ever seen. It's also great diplomacy.

Much of it was put in place by GOP presidents, such as Bush's PEPFAR program, which has saved more than 26M lives.

Great news for all those who can’t sit still. On my wish list!

I think I’ve experienced both the niceness and the (extreme) unsettlingness from accepting his view

I really liked Left Out. I look forward to this :)

For this reason… I identify more with @sentientism.bsky.social over @humanists.uk. I’d love to see you put all life front and center of your worldview, as I love so much of what you stand for :)

I agree with a lot of what I see from humanists… but I’d love to see the wellbeing of all sentient beings (I.e. including non-human animals) considered and cared for. Caring about the wellbeing of everyone who can feel suffering and happiness feels kinder and less religion-y.

I’d highly recommend The Master and His Emissary, given your interest in mind. Even just the first half (which focusses on the brain&consciousness). The audiobook can be quite dense at times, I enjoyed jumping about in the paperback. The author has been on lots of podcasts if you’d like a taste :)

Politics on the Edge / How Not to be a Politician. Brilliant UK politics memoire.

The Master and his Emissary. Can’t provide adequate blurb. Mind-blowing.

Suffering-Focussed Ethics. Probably the most powerful & worldview-changing philosophy book I’ve ever read. (Yet.. yours is on my list;) )

6/6 loved Nathan Labenz + Elizabeth Cox, but can’t think of a specific moment :)

5/n … the whole “smoke detector” analogy (and his explanation of exposure therapy). I think that bit has improved my mental health. I also liked the part where he discussed how and why different cultures might be happier than the US, and of course the huge segments on anxiety+depression.

4/n #179 Randy Nesse - the whole episode had a big impact on me (reframing my emotions as the outcome of evolutionary pressures - I had a lot of ‘aha’ moments for my own feelings and past experiences). So many good bits, but one that stuck with me personally was …

3/n … I think he also discussed end of life which really resonated, and is particularly topical in the UK.

2/n Jonathan Birch. I found the idea of someone being conscious and people believing and acting as if they’re not extremely harrowing. Many egs throughout the podcast - I found the ones involving human patients particularly powerful, as I myself am a human. …

1/n Loved the Luisa and Kieran ep. Lots of things really resonated and changed my view of the myself and those around me. Best bits: “Jerk Syndrome”; “Feeling bad about not being a different person”; “not needing it to be me that does the impact”; “being a 9/10 and being sad that you’re not a 10/10”

..which usually gives me a nice dopamine boost and leads me to doing more than I would otherwise. And I also feel good (even though progress is so slow).

Conversely I find guilt to be the worst motivator and also obv so bad for my happiness!!

Probably teaching you to suck eggs, but I’ve found the old atomic habits process of being happy that I’m just keeping up the habit rather than attaching the result to my happiness to be so useful. E.g. if I do just 2 minutes of editing per day I’m pleased with myself…

You’re doing it alone, with only your own motivation. Well done you.

In solidarity - I’m giving YT a try, but finding even my low quality editing so painfully slow.
