Woody Guthrie wrote the song to protest the vast social injustice and wealth disparity he saw while traveling the country. He famously had a guitar sticker that read "This Machine Kills Fascists". I loathe to think of his reaction to the US of today, but think we could do with a song just about now.

Interestingly enough, the penultimate two verses of the song are often removed to seem more patriotic, as they are politically charged and critical of America. Pete Seeger never performs the song without them, and President Obama made sure they were sung in this performance.
