Yeah that's a good way to put it, I find it difficult to pin down and verbalize what irks me about it

And all it's done is wildly restrict the idea of what fiction can be, and I think it's this that is the specific thing I find annoying

You've hit the nail on the head there. It's a shame because I was always of the impression that YA is (in theory) a great stepping stone for teenagers who are moving away from longer form books aimed at kids and who might not be equipped to tackle more challenging adult fiction yet

It's not my proudest opinion as it's a bit gatekeep-y and I certainly don't go round bugging people about it as such, It'd be a dickhead thing to do
