Royal Navy Whaleboat. From 1849-1851, Lieutenant WJS Pullen used two of this type of boat with 6 crew in each to explore the Arctic coast from Point Barrow east to the Mackenzie Delta, and then further east to Cape Bathurst, looking for signs of the Franklin Expedition. Nothing was found.

August, 1853. The transport ship Breadalbane sank in 15 minutes after being holed by ice southeast of Beechey Island. The ship’s crew of 21 was rescued by HMS Phoenix. All supplies for the Belcher Expedition were lost. After a painting by Edward A.Inglefield, Captain of HMS Phoenix.
