I just read this stat about Lays Potato Chips:

A 2021 survey found that 42% of consumers didn’t know Lay’s were made out of the spuds.

This may explain a big part of our current societal issues: when 42% of people are too clueless to know potato chips are made from potatoes... Hmmm.

You know you are a software engineer when you see an app for $10 but you think, ‘I could probably write an app to do the same in a few hours…’ and you decide to build it even though it would be much easier and cheaper to just pay the $10.

At the point in upgrading my iPhone to iOS 26 that when every time you check on the progress it keeps getting longer and longer… It said three hours last time I checked and now I’m afraid to look again.

I really want to put MacOS 26 on my system, but with the final release in about 72 hours it doesn't seem like it's worth the time and trouble. I had it on my older Mac mini until an update horked it all up and I had take it to Apple to restore it since I didn't have a second machine back then.

This is who qualifies for the new Covid vaccine. If you consider that about 70% of the country is by this definition overweight (BMI > 25) that already includes a big group. Then add in any other issues, and you likely have a very small group left. Why bother excluding them in this case?

I started "vibe coding" an iOS app idea and realized that I was more frustrated than anything, not having much fun at all. So I quit using AI for anyting but a very few really mundane things. And now I'm actually having fun again. For me software is my art and craft, so I enjoy doing it myself.

Bought a "Renewed Premium" Mac Studio M2 Ultra 32GB/512GB for $899 from Amazon. It came and it's brand new, never opened, set it up and it has a full one year Apple warrantee. It's an older model, but it's a great replacement for my even older M1 Mac Mini. Great machine for the price!

Just saw this chart during the GPT-5 presentation. Assuming that GPT was used to create the graphs, it's not a great look. I've seen graphs scaled in strange ways, but never one quite this off.

Such a joke that the House puts things in a bill that they know the Senate can’t pass under their rules, and then whines when they remove them. Such a waste of time and effort all around. House members should be sanctioned for doing this, maybe a few summarily let go as ‘ineffective’ by DOGE?

So what’s next, the flu vaccine? So much for the party that claims to be all about personal choice.

Looks like my business idea of vaccine tourism unfortunately is starting to make sense with the way the FDA is restricting vaccines. Soon it might make sense to go on vacation and get a vaccine or two before returning home. Maybe I can get a Covid booster in the EU this fall when we visit?

If the Tesla board thinks that replacing Elon will fix everything, it won’t for me until Elon is fully divested from the company. I have no plan to line the pockets of Elon in any way that I can prevent.

So the market is bullish on TSLA now that Musk is "stepping back" and says he will spend more time with it. Sorry, but I don't find that will make me want to buy a Tesla more, actually quite the opposite. If the board fired him I might consider it, otherwise, no thanks.

Question: If a child dies from measles because their parents didn't get them vaccinated, should those parents be charged with child neglect and manslaughter? Seems to be consistent with other scenarios where children are harmed due to parental actions or neglect.

Why is it when discussing auto manufacturers, Stellantis gets listed as "domestic" but they are a dutch owned company? Sure they make cars here, but so do many other foreign owned companies, but they aren't listed as domestic...

Egg cost is high due to bird flu, and bird flu is hard to control because when you pack chickens beak to butt in cages a virus has a field day.

But this also brings to light that your traditionally cheap eggs are at the expense of a lot of suffering chickens. Maybe nature is getting some payback?

One benefit of eating a plant based diet is I have no idea of how much eggs cost. Or milk. Or cheese. Or meat and fish.

Nice to have a stockpile when the trade wars kick in!

All the talk about how AI will replace software engineers is being proposed by people who have no idea what a software engineer really does and the actual challenges in creating a software system. They are the same people who add 2x developers to a team and expect 2x output the next week.

Big fan of @michaelpollan.bsky.social. I've read many of his books and finished "In Defense of Food..." last night. The best part was it challenged my thinking in some areas. This is why I like his books; they help me tune my own feelings and thoughts in a way that few authors can.
