#OnThisDay in 1645, Sir Richard Grenville wrote a letter to Prince Charles, Duke of Cornwall proposing the withdrawal of Kernow from the Civil War by establishing it as a de facto independent polity. 380 years of calls for Cornish devolution! 〓〓

The smack ‘Ant’, carrying wheat from Bude to Plymouth, became stranded at the entrance to Bude Harbour on this day in 1868.

On this day in 1644, the Cornish Royalist Army defeated the Parliamentarians at the Battle of Lostwithiel. It would be the heaviest Parliamentarian defeat of the entire Civil War, with thousands taken prisoner, and thousands more chased out of Cornwall by an angry populace.

The Battle of Lansdowne took place near Bath #OnThisDay in 1643. One of the bloodiest battles of the First Civil War, it led to the death of many of the Cornish Royalist Army including the much-loved commander Sir Bevil Grenville.

On this day in 1997, a group of walkers commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Cornish rising of 1497 crossed from Cornwall into England at Polson Bridge near Launceston. They were retracing the route taken by the Cornish toward London 〓〓 ⚔️

Today is Royal Oak Day: a tradtional celebration of the coronation of Charles II and the return of the monarchy. People loyal to the king wore oak leaves. In Kernow, an oak branch is placed on the tower of St Neot Church annually to mark the occasion #GodSavetheKing

The Battle of Stratton was fought on this day in 1643. An outnumbered and near starved Cornish Royalist army battled uphill all day to expel Parliamentarian forces and secure Cornwall for the King. Stratton’s Antony Payne, standing at 7’4”, likely fought with the Cornishmen 〓〓

On this day in 2001, the first Choughs to be seen in Kernow for over 30 years were reported. The Chough is the symbol of Kernow and its return was said to herald a national revival 〓〓 In 2024, a record 55 pairs attempted breeding & 108 ‘Choughlets’ fledged @cornishchoughs.bsky.social

On this day in 1548, William Body, an English government agent sent to Kernow to enforce Protestant religious changes, was killed in Helston by William Kilter and Pascoe Trevian. This was a precursor to the Prayer Book Rising of 1549 in which 1000s of Cornish were killed.
