On this day in 1793, Sir Goldsworthy Gurney was born at Treator, near Padstow. He went on to invent a new form of lighting by burning lime. His invention was used in theatres and gave us the phrase "in the limelight".

The Stannary Court circuit continues - on this day in 1820, the Stannary Court of Foweymore (Bodmin Moor) was held at the King's Arms in Liskeard. Its judge was appointed by the Lord Warden of the Stannaries.

Today is St Ives Feast, celebrating St Ia who is supposed to have floated to Cornwall from Ireland on a leaf. The feast also commemorates the building of the Parish Church of St Ia in 1434 and includes the famous game of Cornish hurling.

On this day in 1820, the Stannary Court of Blackmore (St Austell moors) was held at the George and Dragon in St Clement. The Stannary Court dealt with people who had broken Stannary Law.

On this day in 1820, the Stannary Court of Penwith and Kerrier was held at the King's Arms in Penryn. The court enforced Stannary Law, its jury comprising six tin miners. Stannary Courts continued to operate in Kernow until 1897 - nearly 150 years after the last meeting of the Stannary Parliament.

Today is Candlemas - you may now take down your Nativity scenes! It is also the Feast of St Feoca, patron saint of St Feock, near Truro. Church services at St Feock were still being held in the Cornish language in 1640.

Today is the Feast of St Crowan, patron of Crowan, near St Erth. She is said to have built an Oratory on the site of Crowan Church. Also the Feast of St Euny, patron saint of Lelant, and the Feast of St Bridget marking Imbolc - the start of spring.

Today is the Feast of King Charles the Martyr - marking the execution of King Charles I on this this day in 1649. He is the patron of the parish church in Falmouth.

#OnThisDay in 1547, King Henry VIII died aged 55. At his coronation in 1509, the procession included nine children of honour representing the lands over which Henry was king: Anjou, Cornwall, England, France, Gascony, Guyenne, Ireland, Normandy and Wales.

On this day in 1550, Humphrey Arundell and others were executed for leading an army in resistance to an English Book of Prayer, seeking to protect their Catholic faith and Cornish language.
