The worst person in California right now is whoever it is whispering in Gavin Newsom's ear that he has a legitimate chance to be President.

can’t overstate how much this country is still saturated with eugenic thinking
Multiple West Virginia lawmakers have recently supported voluntary sterilization of incarcerated people.

Said one lawmaker: “If you want to lessen your prison sentence… then you get your tubes tied, so you don’t bring any more drug babies into the system.”

New Law Could Make It Even Harder to Get Health Care in Deadly West Virginia Lockups
In a last-minute special session, the GOP-led legislature rushed through a law denying care that corrections officials don’t deem “medically necessary.”

Having intrusive thoughts again about what kind of society we could live in if we didn’t insist on, say, paying $13 million dollars per prisoner per year torturing people on Guantanamo Bay

I've been stuck while trying to do some writing about liberalism, and revisited @jelaniya.bsky.social's 2021 New Yorker piece on CRT & Derrick Bell thanks to a Notes from America rerun. So generative! Passing it on: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/09/20/the-man-behind-critical-race-theory

I absolutely search for every participant featured in the NYT "The Hunt" column on LinkedIn and then proceed to make various conjectures about what degree of inherited wealth is factoring into their decision before voting. This... is how I have fun now.

what possible argument is there *for* house style as erasure of meaning when it comes to languages that are not english
This is already an extraordinary piece on the literature of Việt Nam in the New York Times, but this note especially blew me away—what a powerful argument against house style when it comes to foreign languages:

dancer/choreographer and NYC ballroom community member O'Shea Sibley, 28, was with his friends getting gas, vogueing to Beyonce's "Renaissance," when he was stabbed to death late Saturday night.

his death, over a Black LGBT tradition capitalized on by the media, has sent shockwaves.

Working a shift at a beloved LES bookstore embroiled in a nasty NIMBY battle. Lots to say, but in the interim: I implore you to organize people you know about how to Eric Adams capitulation to the NYPD’s fiscally irresponsible demands is making life harder and more dangerous for all New Yorkers

Driving me particularly insane is the fact that Eric Adams seems hell-bent on worsening the already catastrophic housing crisis in this city. Last month, he signed an executive order challenging a decades old consent decree requiring NYC to shelter the unhoused in a timely way. (1/)

I have been shying away from using this platform because I really don’t know the vibes but here I am because I need somewhere to scream into the void: Eric Adams is bad news for new york city
