Really proud to have written a piece in the Globe and Mail with @wklumpen.bsky.social about why investing in transit is a great approach to soften the blow of the trade war!

Opinion: Canada’s real comparative advantage is public transit. That should be our trade-war strategy
This country stands head-and-shoulders above the United States when it comes to urban transportation, and the trade war offers a powerful opportunity

IMPORTANT: The Dutch invested €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do math on investing in better mobility.

Let’s be clear — it wastes public money to NOT do it.

The fact that Deepseek R1 was released three days /before/ Stargate means these guys stood in front of Trump and said they needed half a trillion dollars while they knew R1 was open source and trained for $5M.

Beautiful.

I have a simple motto which I hold myself to:

"Don't look for reasons to be unhappy"

You'll know when you have a real problem on your hands, and it's much more fun to ask how that problem can be solved using your own brain and your own skills rather than an app or a widget.

That's the fun in life

My crankiest belief is that we are now being sold on solutions to problems which only exist because we've let others convince us they exist. That is what "innovation" seems to be in 2025.

There's a level of introspection that's just not happening these days re: what actually needs to bother us.

Are policies to be counted a success only when a party wins the next election? Was Medicare a failure after being enacted in 1965 because Democrats lost in 1968? Many policies with long-run benefits take time to prove themselves—and win elections.

In the @nybooks.com I offer historical perspectives on the political failure of Bidenomics: a massive program built thru business and nonprofit welfarism. Market-making, as I call it, has its place, but it must be embedded within more direct social benefits.

Yes, 2025 isn't looking like it will be a great year. Right wing authoritarianism is rising. Global warming continues unabated. The world is as fractured as ever.

But at least we can count on one positive thing: it is the Year of Linux Desktop.
