Predictably leaving an Edgar Wight film you have to hunt the soundtrack - and so far I haven’t found a playlist. Anyway - it’s not a bad popcorn movie but there are better Richard Bachman stories out there

Took me a while and almost lost it but enjoyed the recommendation from here “Tainted Cup” last week (enough to buy the sequel). I’ve moved over to “William” by Mason Coile. This months book subscription from Mr B’s - so far so good at building an unsettling premise

About 1 hour off finishing “A voice in the night” by Simon Mason. Book 4 (I think) of an enjoyable crime / police procedural with good characters. Lacking motivation about what to start next so will see what others have

When the sound is screwed for the first 10 minutes and you aren’t sure if it’s meant to be that way (projectionist apologised / fixed). Anyway, entertaining film - I’d have preferred a different ending but it definitely grabs you

Another Monday night film, another jazz soundtrack. “The Mastermind”, think I enjoyed characters and mood more than the story

On the last chapters of “The Zorg” by Siddharth Kara. Incredibly readable historical account of how 132 men, women and children were murdered aboard a slave ship. Reads like a courtroom thriller Doesn’t preach, educates in an easy to consume tale - my book of the year so far

Film overload for a Monday night - left “one flew over the cuckoos nest” thinking maybe I was wrong and nurse Ratchett wasn’t so bad. Next “ballad of a small player”

Good morning. Finished “The Long Shoe” by Bob Mortimer and heartily recommend (if you like Bob Mortimer). On a book subscription choice now - “The Ressurectionist” by A Rae Dunlap - medical grave robbing skullduggery in 1820’s Edinburgh - full of evocative period character so far
October 20, 2025 at 6:11 AM
Just finishing “Venetian Vespers” by John Banville - thoroughly enjoyed even though the narrator is thoroughly unlikeable (deliberately). Next Bob Mortimer and “The Long Shoe” which I’m expecting to be filled with likeable characters

Good morning - moving forward a millennia or so this week with “Venetian Vespers” by John Banville. Lots of indignant / unaware Englishness so far and turn of the century atmosphere

I really enjoyed “One battle after another”, mainly because in my head I was reliving the 80’s and watching The A-Team
September 29, 2025 at 9:35 PM
Morning - just started “Sword of the war god” by Tim Hodkinson - it has started with battles and intrigue - so far so good

Slightly cheating on Bradford by having a curry in the capital

Recommend “Clown Town” by Mick Herron - doesn’t disappoint. Now on to “Deadwood” by Peter Cozzens which is very readable and if you ever watched the show you can’t help but hear their voices in your head. Long live Al Swearengen…

I appear to be just visiting train stations today (I’m not even here to catch a train)

20 minutes shivering on the train platform as the taxi was early….Autumn is real

Morning, feeling the autumn chill. Finished “How to win an information war” by Peter Pomerantsev and recommend (the story of a u-boat captain surrendering as he heard he was a new father on the radio but hadn’t been home in the last year was excellent). Now “Clown Town” by Mick Herron is

Finished “The Damned King” by Justin Lee Anderson (enjoyed but do wish there would be summaries of the previous books when reading a series…my memory is not what it was). Now on to “How to win an Information War” by Peter Pomerantsev - which so far is an entirely new perspective on WW2 history
September 8, 2025 at 7:50 AM
Morning - finished “The Bright Sword” last week, can’t say I got into it, might need to air a break from fantasy. Inexplicably on that basis I have moved on to “The Damned King” by Justin Lee Anderson and enjoying being back in that world

Shepherds pie at the Yan @ Broadrayne amazing - unfortunately Sherlock failed to win any prizes at the Patterdale Dog Show (will consult lawyers on my return. In other news sitting in the car with battery anxiety is no fun

Strong recommendation for last weeks book - “The Long Drop” by Denise Mina - haven’t raced through a book like that in a while. This week on to “The Harrow” by Noah Eaton which looks intriguing…
