Listen I wrote this dynamic into a yet-untitled WIP and it’s one of the most fun things ever to work on, which is probably why I keep dragging my heels on finishing the story, because I’m not ready to be done with it yet

This is a great list!

YES! And I do write all of those!

Thank you! No I completely relate to seeing a problem and being like ooh is this a puzzle to help someone solve 😅

I’ve started telling all my friends “let me know when you just wanna complain or vent and not troubleshoot” lol

I’m not super notesy luckily but I’m locked out of the newer version completely 😅 that is 100% something I should have done before shutting down my computer that last time. Clown behavior

Anything I’ve worked on in the last 2 years is for the newer software and the files aren’t backward compatible!

#amnotwriting I guess 🪦

So I walked into 2026 with a resolution to complete some projects and start shopping them to agents or whatever, completely locked out of all my writing unless I buy a new laptop, I guess?

My work computer theoretically runs my old license version BUT 🧵

I go to buy my new scrivener license and something tells me to read the details, which reveal:

The version of scrivener I am about to buy will also not work on my machine. 🧵

I’m procrastinating. I don’t shut my laptop off. Day 30 lasts months.

Discord updates again and my computer can’t update to match it.

Eventually my laptop, having been awake an ungodly amount of time for a geriatric machine, needs a complete shut down and restart.

It is time to pay the piper 🧵

Scrivener update is so substantial they want me to buy a new license. I’m not there at the moment but it has a 30 day free trial of the new one, so I can still get back to work.

The new version updates all my working files and isn’t backwards compatible. Fine.

I reach “day 30” on my free trial 🧵

For example:

I’m driving a 2012 MacBook until the wheels fall off. In 2024 I made the mistake of auto-updating discord, where my writing group lives.

Discord forced me to upgrade my OS.

My new OS means Scrivener now requires an update to run. 🧵

I’ve been reading through the other comments and thinking about “reset authors” now too! I’ve def got a few of those and I often turn to them after a few reads that don’t thrill me, when I need a sure thing banger

I always do a complete genre swap after a book really rocks me! That way my brain doesn’t do as much comparison. Following high fantasy with nonfiction, or historical fic with contemporary romance, etc
