Billy Kidman was fired in storyline by WCW, and he convinced management that the way to REALLY convince people it was real was to actually for-real release him from his terrible contract.

He debuted on WWE the next day.

With the possible exception of AEW, all the other ones eventually failed because they were even bigger mad houses. There was a period in the 90s where they tried to convince the *wrestlers themselves* that the storylines were real!

there's a huge difference between saying, "Ds aren't fighting hard enough" and "Ds and Rs are the same" if you want to appeal to D voters who are passionately motivated by anti R animus (as they should be.)
