What's next for Portland elementary & middle schools that are at risk for collapse in an earthquake? We don't know. But we should.

These are our main takeaways from the FIO Committee meeting on November 10th. It’s not all crystal clear, so we strongly encourage you to watch the meeting if you can on PPS’s YouTube page (link in our linktree).

What questions do you still have? Comment and we will try to answer what we can!

We’ve also linked to the PPS YouTube channel where you can watch the meeting, if you cannot attend.

If you see folks in our t-shirts stop by for a button or sign to show your support for seismically safe schools!

Monday, November 10th at 4:30 PM the Facilities & Oversight Committee meeting will discuss a new formula and prioritization list.

The new formula & prioritization list is already in the agenda for the meeting, which is linked in our linktree/bio and there are screenshots of info in this post.

More fire public comment from one of our SSPPS parents. PPS has had millions of dollars in money earmarked for seismic work that has not gone to fixing the most dangerous elementary & middle school buildings.

Seismic work has been in school bonds for decades now, yet some schools are still incredibly dangerous. Why?

Another major update.

Things are happening fast, and if you are interested in advocating for seismic safety and Portland’ public elementary and middle schools, now is a great time to get involved.

Can’t stop, won’t stop! Yes, we got a resolution, and yes, the bond passed in May, but the work continues.

Get caught up on what’s been going on in the fight for seismic safety at PPS elementary & middle schools and see how you can get involved this month!

We passed a resolution. We passed a bond. We have funding for seismic improvements.

But the work isn’t over.

We need to keep showing up to make sure our schools are seismically safe for all of Portland’s children.

Our own Neon Brooks on KATU saying what a lot of us are feeling: the risk to our schools in even a moderate seismic event is terrifying. It's our job to get out there and participate to make sure we see this issue addressed in a meaningful way.

PPS just released updated seismic safety ratings for our schools and will briefly discuss these reports at the next Board Meeting on 9/9 at 8:25 PM.

More to come after we’ve reviewed all of this new information — but if you’re interested in seismic safety at our schools attend the 9/9 meeting.
September 6, 2025 at 10:09 PM
How to show up for our kids: there are two important Board Meetings coming up on 9/9 and 9/16 that you can attend in-person or virtually (www.pps.net/Page/1790). You can write an email or submit a public comment. And you can sign up for our mailing list at safestructurespps.org.

Every child deserves to learn in a safe and supportive environment, and that includes buildings that can stand strong in a seismic event. We look forward to making more progress toward this vision in the 25-26 school year.

But there's still a lot of work to do.

How has PPS prioritized seismic funds in the past? Have the most at-risk elementary and middle schools received the priority work? Unfortunately, no.

We took a list of PPS elementary and middle schools, sorted them by their 2012 seismic risk score, and noted which have received

With the recent 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Russia, it's a good time to remember that every day that passes we get closer to our own "Big One --" and that many of our schools are not structurally sound to withstand this impact.

Thanks to Huynh Pool, Rose City Park parent, for hosting this video!

We are thrilled that the 2025 Bond has passed and that seismic upgrades for the most at-risk elementary and middle schools have been prioritized. But our work is not done. We want to raise awareness about the seriousness of this issue so that the public will keep up the pressure until every school
