My friend Peter and I did a pod on how to buy a gift. Unlike other gift guides, this is not just a list of products, but suggestions on how to approach gifting (although, this clip is basically about a book we love). 🧵

I will not be participating in Advent of Code this year as I have a load-bearing need to believe I'm a supergenius coder and this has "reality check" written all over it

Our Discord support agent was kind of annoying, so I asked it to pretend to be a 58-year old systems administrator from Ohio that wrote on forums a lot.

Turns out -- this makes your support bot extremely competent. The quality of its support responses are now far better.

so basically implement the whole thing once for iOS, then start from scratch, divide into smallest atomic units, and implement each unit on Android while making sure every unit is implemented with no perf degradation. if you miss something suboptimal even once, the whole thing is slow af

The fastest growing app on the App Store is fully open source. You may have heard of it. But do you know how it works? I do now! Huge thanks to everyone who helped me make this one happen 🙏

The Bluesky website is probably the best way to use the platform on the Mac, especially given how fast and lightweight it is. BUT, if you want to use a native app - Graysky and Skeets are actually quite good on macOS. They're technically iPad apps, but they run great on Apple Silicon machines.

Bluesky is proof that cryptocurrency isn't a core tenant of decentralization. The team demonstrated extreme levels of pragmatism by leveraging new and existing technologies to produce something people actually use.

Welp, I got my own PDS up and running in one hour (not counting a ten minute coffee break)

For the last decade I've either worked on apps that use Heroku so I don't ever touch a server, or within teams that someone else handled the deploys.

So... safe to say the @bsky.app team made this easy!
Working on a setting up a test PDS just to try it out.

Won't be moving my main account over to it until Bluesky makes that a reversible action, but no harm in exploring the underlying tech.

Will drop notes in this thread live as I attempt to work through docs here:

I love this story. I've never heard of this band and I wouldn't know its members if I sat next to them on a plane, and yet they're a favorite of millions of people. "Fame" is an extremely malleable term.

Why Michael Learns to Rock Is Big in Asia
Michael Learns to Rock hoped for success west of their native Denmark. But for 30 years, they’ve had a devoted following on the other side of the world.
