Making the sherry trifle at Christmas is my job and last year we had a debate about restocking sherry (dry for cooks/sweet for trifle?) versus breaking with tradition and using something else. I went with Mirabellenschnapps and it passed muster, so this year I might try kirsch or pear schnapps.

I can distance myself from the coffee with ease (it's roasted out the road in Breitengüßbach) but I've been in Bamberg for too long to be able to think of smoked beer as just "it". Beech-smoked malt or alder, cherry, oak? What style of beer is it apart from the smoke? How smoky is it? Who brewed it?

Man darf sich auch bewusst sein, dass Hochschultexte häufig ins Englische übersetzt werden müssen. "Nachwuchs" gehört zu den Begriffen, die das oft nicht gut überleben. Die Infantilisierung ist bei "young" und "junior" noch ausgeprägter als im Deutschen und bei "jung" klopft auch das AGG an.

A colleague just sent me the link, but she is too busy with translation work to down tools and read. That's my problem, too. So I can't comment on the piece, but I can say that I feel constant, exhausting pressure to choose between practicing the profession and engaging with the state of it.

I was a bit worried about my local bats this year because I saw a few in the woods that came out of hibernation weeks before there were insects around. I wasn't sure if it was just too warm or if the forestry work had bothered them.

I'm told that a "Hörnla" is not a croissant because it's thinner, crunchier, more buttery, and predates the croissant, but they still look croissant-like enough to me for me to chuck the cow horn image in along with the crescent moons.

How many experienced cyclists per bike bus? Just one friendly mentor who leads and can't assist those behind, or a team with junction marshals in the middle (so people feel safe at junctions and the back half of the group doesn't get left behind at traffic lights) and a rearguard?

Of course a solo pilgrimage does not a "Wallfahrt" make, so to get my dinner I also need a few helpful people who will carry the flags, play the instruments, sing the hymns, and tend to the walking or biking wounded.

Chapter 5 of their style guide is much better than that (commission.europa.eu/system/files...) but programming forms so they come out right in every language (or even any language) is hard. Would you get round the issue by dropping titles altogether more often or by fixing every glitch?

Yes, and at least if you're Irish it often tends to be the little bits about Ireland in a broader treatment of something or other that give the game away.

Wenn Kinder einfache Vokabeln wie "Bach" oder "Hecke" nicht kennen, würde ich auch dafür sorgen wollen, dass sie mehr Zugang zur Natur erhalten und sich freier entfalten können. In autoverseuchten Betonwüsten kommt man mit diversen Vokabeln und Kindheitsbestandteilen kaum in Berührung.

A few weeks ago I said to a German client that the word they wanted was technically courgette (their style guide favours British English) but that I thought their readers would mostly understand zucchini better. But when I'm speaking for me and not for someone else, it's courgettes all the way down.

My co-tutor said I (being from the West of Ireland) would probably not concede it was windy, but I did notice that our adult beginner's cycling course has been affected by wind, sun, and little people zooming around on contraptions.

I saw lovely oak leaves glowing in stunning evening light yesterday when I went out to escape the news, but they promptly reminded me of the news that it's oak processionary caterpillar season. I'm thankful that I've not yet met so much as a hair of one, never mind a whole procession.

A car being swept downstream is scary because it's a major natural disaster. A car bobbing in an underpass is scary because it's a reminder that a lot of people with a very tenuous grasp of logic and/or poor reflexes or poor vision steer tonnes of metal through our cities every day.

I see local-ish pictures of floating cars regularly because a few local underpasses (mostly roads under old railway bridges) flood multiple times a year, basically after any heavy rain, and people insist on driving into them every time even though the problems are both known and screamingly obvious.

It is a common practice in Germany to use sheep and goats as cheap lawnmowers to keep particular habitats (juniper heaths, for example) frozen in the state they were in when they gained protected status. It can help some individual species, but it doesn't address the planetary crisis.

I often see sheep/goats in paddocks in Germany ("Gatter" is more a paddock than a small pen here) or with a shepherd who moves around. The density can be high-ish because the sheep move on quickly. Sandy grassland is a rare habitat where I am because it was good for building and bad for farming.
