Today, I presented to new employees on the clinical ethics service and how/when to consult me. I opened the floor for discussion and the first comment from the audience was, “You look good for doing your line of work.” 💀 #bioethics #clinicalethics

Indiana state legislature just staged a hostile takeover of IU, functionally eliminating tenure, promising to close smaller (hum) majors, taking over the IU board, and cutting the IU budget. This is so bleak

Health policy is never just about health outcomes; it's about political vision and community building, or lack thereof. In this article, we outline a model of public health designed to combat authoritarianism and the social conditions that fuel it.

My move, new job, holidays, plus Sheba’s passing has put me more than a month behind on emails and texts. But finally catching up on everything - and I’ll be more active on here too. Thanks all 🙏

Lawmakers in Britain voted on Friday in favor of a proposal to legalize assisted dying for some terminally ill patients in England and Wales. It was the first time in nearly a decade that British lawmakers voted on assisted dying. Here’s what to know.

This week, Sheba passed away while surrounded by some of her favorite humans. I adopted Sheba from a shelter in Detroit. In our ten years together, we did four cross country roadtrips. We hiked mountains throughout California and took lazy afternoon naps in Central Park.

They’ve past few years, we’ve witnessed paranoid politics fuse with how the public thinks about healthcare. We’re not only in an age of anti-vaccination, but where even the ingredients in our food are framed as intentional poisons from elites and adversaries.

Honestly this #ASBH23 was one of the most enjoyable conferences I’ve been to. Bioethics & health humanities has a long way to go, but there are so many people out here really doing the work to make our space more inclusive, transformative, and impactful.

Now, time for rest!

Absolutely loved the audience participation. Affirming to know that so many clinical ethicists struggle with the pure emotional intensity of our work - and loved the strategies people have employed to manage it. WE CAN create a more sustainable profession.

Note: When I say “ethical issues,” I don’t mean “ethical violations” - I also mean why values can conflict between stakeholders; why policy doesn’t always map onto moral reasoning or experiences; how our cultural does (and doesn’t) guide our moral behaviors.
Bioethics lacks a comprehensive framework to understand how and why ethical issues emerge in healthcare settings. Often we take them for granted, "well, this is just how healthcare works."

How do you determine whether a particular decision reinforces systems of power, privilege, and oppression?

Thinking about healthcare here, but happy to hear about decisions in general.
