Your annual reminder that US streets and vehicles are generally not designed to keep pedestrians, especially small ones, safe.

So wonderful Halloween is the most likely day you’ll kill a child with your car, and someone will kill a child you care about with theirs.

I’m grateful for the partnership btw #Boulder, @colorado.gov, and state+local leaders which is on the verge of bringing 2 new passenger train services to life:

* Commuter rail from Boulder Junction to Denver by 2029

* Boardings to Winter Park 20ish miles south of Boulder even sooner

The Millennium Harvest House Hotel in #Boulder has given way to central, no-car-needed housing for 1000ish CU students now being built. 🤩

TiL the old building lives on:

Thousands of truckloads are being reconstituted into 9+ miles of the new game-changing CO 119 bike path to Longmont. 😍

City of #Boulder has concluded its mega #parking reform.

Parking minimums are now gone. So all those patches of 200 square feet that home-builders have been required to install at a cost of $30,000+ per space can now be used for other things like vegetable gardens, bike parking, and housing.

One of greatest gifts of being an elected official:

The chance to sit with ppl who didn’t vote for me & ask me to consider a reasoned alternative to my thinking—then talk.

It always makes me stronger.

There’s no room in the US for political violence.

The way to a better future is better ideas.

Sometimes people fight “growth” while lamenting how long the list is to get senior housing.

Other times they seek you out at an event to say thanks for being persistent about improving transportation options and present with their gratitude a disco ball.

I will be donating to council chambers.

Progress check time for #Boulder city council.

My term goes through November 2026, putting my cohort somewhere between a little more than halfway done and rounding third base.

During the past 1.5 years this council has enacted at least two dozen measures to meaningfully improve #housing and…

Thanks to the nearly 100 residents of #Boulder who hand-wrote notes to support safety/accessibility improvements to Folsom Street.

Plus the so many others who’ve been working to move this project forward over the last decade.

Boulder city council approved it unanimously today.

Memo packet: bouldercolorado.primegov.com/Portal/viewe...

It’s been almost 10 years since the city implemented, and the then council retracted, similar safety measures on Folsom.

#Boulder city council is back in session and this Thursday (8/7/25) we have a big one:

Council will consider approval as-is of protected bikeways and a road diet to #FolsomStreet, the third in a troika of safety/accessibility improvements to arterials by this council (after Iris and N 30th).

For years, research scientists have said to make life better and tackle climate change, cities should stop planning for cars and start planning for access.

It's been crickets.

Last week, #Boulder said "let's do it."

The jobs-housing balance? Not a lot of change there—it’s grown modestly since 2010, from 1.86 to 1.93 at last count.

The verdict:

Boulder isn’t full. It’s actually poised to become emptier.

Over the decades, Boulder’s population has grown slowly relative to the county—and at a slower rate vs the county compared to other university towns vs their counties.

CU’s share of the city pop *is* up from 2010, but it’s not a deluge—the figure has grown from 29% to 32%.

Is #Boulder, CO full?

Let’s have a look at data.

The 5th largest city in Colorado in 1960, Boulder is now #12.

In 1970, 3% of all Coloradans lived in Boulder. By 2020, it was 1.8%.

Boulder’s population growth rate was 7%+ in the 1970s. The rate declined to 0-1% today.

What an honor to cut the ribbon with Congressman @joeneguse.bsky.social for 750 tube-to-workers at Boulder’s 2025 18th annual Tube to Work Day.

Much gratitude to the tubers who have gone before—and here’s to Boulder’s best tubing days being ahead.

Last night #Boulder city council moved a package of parking policies closer to completion that will:

* Eliminate “parking minimums” which unnecessarily force car parking and traffic into the city

Job alert:

#Boulder’s Transportation & Mobility director.

A great opportunity to lead Boulder and city transportation (and #climate) practice into the future.

I’ll be at @nacto.bsky.social this week if anyone wants a POV. Or DM me.

The # of high fire-risk days/year in #Boulder has grown from 14 in 2005 to 116 in 2022 and projected to be 192 by 2030.

That’s from a new study specifically on Boulder commissioned by the city.

This is a future we need to plan and build differently for.

Thread

My City of #Boulder colleagues and I are hearing a lot from immigrant and LGBTQ+ community members seeking reassurance that their local government will continue to support them.

The answer is yes, without question.

City of Boulder departments will continue to serve anyone in need.

Thanks to all in #Boulder who have taken and will take time to point out street and other maintenance issues.

Please be advised the best way to get a remedy for a practical issue is to report it to the Inquire Boulder portal here.

Thanks for making things better!
