Highly recommended! Just make sure you train and do as many hills and stairs as you can. And don’t be hesitant to stay 2 nights down there, either. We were very glad to have a day to rest (relatively speaking, with more level hiking/exploring) before heading back up.

Yep, very safe. Challenging hike, no doubt, but well-maintained trail. The camping setup at Bright Angel campground was stellar, even with all the rain we had.

They really did an incredible job with the Linville Gorge. There is a seriously engaged community of people who love that place, from the Forest Service all the way to the volunteers with orgs like Wild South.
