Nobody did anything wrong, but it was awful. Here's how it went down: one well-meaning colleague had clearly insisted on inviting me, while the rest of the dept. was set on hiring in a different (specific) research area.

I did it in 2004-05. At the one place that was a hard no, I didn't want to be there and they didn't want me there. This was obvious after about 20 minutes, but we had to go through the whole two days. Excruciating! I was just as happy to pretend it never happened.
