Friday morning we lost a neighbor & 2 people were injured, all due to traffic violence & probably speeding.

MLK Way here is signed 25 mph speed limit, so a driver-pedestrian crash shouldn’t be so deadly, & a secondary driver-driver crash shouldn’t happen.

Speed kills.

We did our 1st walk audit for the MLK Way Traffic Safety Committee where we observed and walked across and along MLK Way between Dawson St & Hudson St, taking notes & sharing personal experiences. Our group will use this & future walk audits to create recommendations for improvements #seattle #pnw

Bicycle Weekends are a highlight of enjoying Seattle’s wonderful Lake Washington Blvd every year. We sent our recommendations to the City of Seattle to make this long running tradition of converting 3 miles of park road even better in 2025

Letter on Rainier Valley Greenways-Safe Streets letterhead: Dear Ms.Stamm and Mr. Hoy, CC: Mayor Harrell, Adiam Emery, CM Soloman, CM Nelson, AP Diaz, Board of Park and Recreation Commissioners, SDOT Director Spotts, Bicycle Advisory Board, Pedestrian Advisory Board As residents of the Rainier Valley, we are excited to hear that planning for the 2025 Bicycle Weekends program on Lake Washington Boulevard is underway. By limiting automobile traffic, this program has, for decades, increased access to Lake Washington Boulevard, providing families and neighbors a safe space to walk, roll, bike, skate, and enjoy the waterfront park. Historically, the Bicycle Sundays programming included a number of Sundays every summer. During the most urgent Covid years the City created the Keep Moving Streets Program on Lake Washington Blvd and other streets. By closing the roadway to cars for extensive periods of time, this “Open Streets” program allowed for socially distanced outdoor exercise and respite. The Keep Moving Street program allowed residents of the Rainier Valley and beyond to re-imagine what the park and roadway at Lake Washington Blvd could be, leading to consistent growth in park use along the entire boulevard. As the pandemic waned, the number and duration of Open Street days on Lake Washington Blvd has been reduced relative to the peak in 2020. The 2023, 2024 Summer schedules included the fewest days since 2019, while there has been ever-increasing use by the public. Our members, and many park users we have encountered during our outreach efforts, have voiced their disappointment in the more limited 2023, 2024 program schedules, the diminished number of weekends, the omission of any of the three summer federal holidays and the elimination of Friday nights and early Monday mornings from Bicycle Weekends. Our highest priority request for the 2025 Bicycle weekend program schedule is the inclusion of the three summer federal holiday Mondays. This simple request will sign… In the long term, given the proven popularity of the Open Street events, we strongly urge the City to return to the successful 2021 Keep Moving Streets schedule, which included every weekend throughout the summer from Friday evening to Monday morning, including holidays. Our organization has also observed several implementation issues that became particularly acute during recent summers’ programming. Drivers frequently ignored the signs indicating that the boulevard was closed to vehicle traffic, and often drove at high speeds alongside children and families enjoying the parkspace. By failing to provide suitable signage and barriers, the City has created unnecessary conflict and put park users and drivers alike at risk. At least one vehicle crashed into the lake during a Bicycle Weekend, despite the boulevard being ostensibly closed to automobile traffic. More robust barriers, the presence of City staff or volunteer docents, and basic communications materials would mitigate the serious risks observed in recent years, and are typical at Open Streets events in other cities across the country. We present in the attachment to this letter recommendations to enable improved summer programming in the park this year. We would like to invite you and your colleagues to discuss these recommendations further with us at your convenience. Note that many of these recommendations are repeated from similar letters delivered in the spring of 2023 and 2024. If implemented, many of the dangerous situations we observed on the boulevard could have been mitigated or avoided.
