Now, I said I did a 3 color print, but since the lineart is solid black with no tones, I didn't need to make a halftone.

CMYK printing uses different angles depending on the device.
September 13, 2025 at 1:18 PM
Now, here's where people goof up. You want to use DIFFERENT ANGLES for your halftones when layering them on top of each other. If you don't then the color mixing effect doesn't work. The image on the left has overlapping screens, the image on the right uses different angles.

I then converted the grayscale channel to bitmap using the halftone option. This is where the magic happens. I select a frequency (known as LPI in the print world) of 71. This is the LPI risographs use for the "medium dot" size. For the angle of the darker color I select 75.

Under the channels tab, I click "split channels" this separates each channel into a single channel grayscale image file.

First thing I did was convert my CMYK flats to a 2-color riso profile made by color/shift. The profile automatically separates your color into spot color channels. The colors are calculated based on the color profile. In this case I used purple/orange, but switched the orange to hot pink.

I made this cool 3 color riso print using mechanical color separation principles.

Two things I care more about than I care to admit have combined to make the worst simulacrum of a comic and/or game piece of all time. I’m genuinely embarrassed for everyone involved.
Why does anybody want this stuff? There’s good art being made all the time. Why this?!

My anthology is nominated for an Ignatz. Go vote for it.

It’s probably the coolest thing I’ve seen toner do. Art by MS Harkness
March 20, 2025 at 5:39 PM
The process is so precise that it picks up the security dots that print in yellow on all full color xerox impressions. You can avoid this by setting your color mode to grayscale
March 20, 2025 at 5:35 PM
The process involves printing solid black toner on a laminated printed cover. The digital foil adheres to all toner once it’s heated up to about 240 degrees.
March 20, 2025 at 5:33 PM
The precision and consistency you can achieve with the process is much sharper than anything I’ve seen traditional foil stamps do.
March 20, 2025 at 5:31 PM
In my day job, I’ve been developing a process to add foil elements to covers by using a material called digital foil or sleeking.
