Well, it's not sudden. It's just suddenly being REPORTED. This rot was a deliberate policy choice, and I kept the receipts. Because I'm not the BBC.

Meanwhile the print media could hardly be expected to hold the Tories to account, given their almost constant irrumating support for Conservatives. Of Britain’s 15 main national newspapers, only one backed the Labour Party. The rest vocally supported the Tories or their Lib Dem partners in the coalition. Thankfully, we could rely on the BBC to balance things out by flexing its renowned leftie muscles. The corporation’s controller of global news output, Craig Oliver, joined the Downing Street operation as David Cameron’s director of communications. Andrew Neil, editor of the right-wing Spectator magazine, fronted both of the BBC’s two leading political discussion programmes, This Week and Daily Politics. The editor of these programmes, Robbie Gibb, was brother of Conservative MP Nick Gibb, and later became director of communications at Theresa May’s Downing Street. Sure, Nick Robinson, the BBC’s chief political correspondent, had been national president of the Young Conservatives and then president of the Oxford University Conservative Association,but those sympathies were balanced out by his deputy, James Landale, an old-Etonian close contemporary of David Cameron who was also offered – and declined – the Tory communications job. Meanwhile, a report by the University of Cardiff found from 2007 to 2012 (both in and out of office), Conservative politicians received 50 per cent more airtime on BBC News at Six than Labour politicians did. So if the tsunami of unmitigated failure that started in 2010 has been a revelation to you, nobody should be especially surprised.

The Tories had been assiduous in their attacks on the BNP, yet rolled over in a heartbeat for UKIP, a party that shared all the same obsessions and prejudices. Those could be characterised as: only people of British blood should live here, and being raised on British territories makes us superior. Our blood is best. Our soil is best. Blood and soil. This explanation is ugly. Nobody is denying that. It says ugly things about the nature of many of our fellow citizens, and it expresses ugly ideas about the nature of the ascendent political dogma of the last decade. But there’s another, simultaneous explanation for the rise of UKIP, and one that’s built on profound cynicism. The audience for Nick Griffin’s appearance on Question Time was 8 million people, unprecedented viewing figures for the programme.71 Most tuned in for the bear-baiting, not to support BNP policies, but the controversy, to put it bluntly, put bums on seats, and Question Time wanted more of it, please. The BBC is supposed to provide fair and balanced representation of a range of political views. Yet in the five years leading up to the 2013 local elections, Nigel Farage appeared on Question Time 25 times, compared to 11 appearances by every representative from the Green Party combined. 72 Farage has appeared on the programme more than anybody else this century.73 The Beeb wasn’t alone in embracing this controversy-magnet: in the whole of 2003, Nigel Farage was mentioned just 36 times in national media. By 2012, it had risen to 23,000.74 The result of wall-to-wall promotion was, unsurprisingly, a rise in popularity; how could it not be, when Farage is, above all else, a self-aggrandising populist, to whom the media had granted countless hours of free publicity?

Nine days since I started writing, half the book completed, the rest fully outlined, and I'm on one hell of a roll.

Still no idea what to call it, so it's currently "Sequel to Baby's Breath".

3 years ago today, I signed 3000 copies of my first book.

I'd been a bored software guy for 32 years, and never dreamed something like this would happen.
