The Knock-Knock Man is 3 today. It’s been a rocky road with the publisher going under 4 months later (not related) & hoped for sequel being shelved (for now) So grateful to those that have supported my little horror noir. Signed copies can still be bought here -> www.russellmardell.co.uk/more-info

Absolutely sublime graphic adaptation of Paul Auster’s masterpiece, The New York Trilogy from @faberbooks.bsky.social A novel that means so much to me. Art by Paul Karasik, Lorenzo Mattotti & David Mazzucchelli. A stunning piece of work!

Happy 9th to my spiky little romcom book baby, Cold Calling. Rubbish as I am at self promotion, only natural for me to mention a book you can no longer buy (ebook & 2nd hand though, I guess, if so inclined) Reprint to come, hopefully. Augustines lyric quote remains a career highlight #shinyapples

Being a nerd for 70's cinema, I've got used to many actors & directors I've admired passing. Always dreaded it being Gene. Admiration can be easy, but sometimes it goes beyond that. If art is about connection, then here I connected. Gene Hackman. The greatest. He even looked cool with a mustache 4/4

His performance in The Conversation is my favourite ever. He manages to make a buttoned down, insular, bland man, crippled by pride, riveting, his slow unraveling utterly heartbreaking. The film is a tragedy & the final scene is devastating. Whatever the Oscars mean, he should have walked it 3/4

Not many actors could find his level in a scene. Clint could, Denzel could, but I can't think of any more. I guess you needed to be iconic enough to be known by just your first name to stand a chance. (Jack could have too) Even in his poor/take the cheque films he came out relatively unscathed 2/4

Gene. My favourite. It was the twinkle in the eye, the bar stool buddy laugh & the ability to turn that persona on its head, often in the same scene. No-one did righteous fury quite like him & only Harrison Ford can match him on the finger pointing scale. Great at comedy too though. "Cigars!" 1/4

Seriously, it screams folk horror to me. Possibly explains a lot. Terrifying
