Lots to say about philanthropy, rural, music, books and rural Quebec. Linked In killed my spirit. Does anyone care to listen? We shall soon find out.
Starting my playlist for my future Memorial service--
Down Where the Drunkards Roll- Richard and Linda Thompson
Carmelita- Warren Zevon

The circle is now complete. Five weeks in rural Quebec. Then back home here in North Carolina. Every bird captured on Merlin in Quebec has now been picked up at my backyard feeder. Except for the 10K Snow Geese of course.

Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE) has a thoughtful new report on "bridging" - exploring language that can help bring Americans together. Well worth the read! www.pacefunders.org/language/

As I wind-down this phase of the professional career, I am getting asked if I plan on writing a memoir. God help us. But if someone wants me to pen about my 25+ experiences with social sector executive search firms, I am available for a chat.

"Was born in an abundance of inherited sadness"
By all accounts Ryan Addams is a wreck of a person, but he could always carry a lyric.

Calling yourself an equity or trust based philanthropy doesnt make you effective or meaningful for communities. The two are not the same.

Lots of waiting around AM at coffee shops last couple weeks adjacent to groups of 6-8 older men. Their chief concerns:
(1) Who uses which bathroom?
(2) Migrant rapists and killers
(3) Defending their property.

Philanthropy loves to impress ourselves but can't connect with people unlike themselves.

The philanthropy industry is now run by consultants and intermediaries- and the dumbing down of foundation staff is palpable.

Philanthropy has moved so decidedly to be about itself-- and the various voices and needs of high ego staff and their friends and advocates-that I barely recognize the field from when I started 25 years ago when the focus was on the folks outside the walls of the institution. So much self reflection.
