Stopped to watch the Canada geese picking over a just-shorn cornfield this morning. The last of the leaves are lingering on the apple trees in the background, but with the wind storms we’ve been having they won’t last much longer. Autumn has been glorious this year.

We’re wading into a nice Taurus moon now, through all of Tuesday, and it’s a great time to plant cold-hardy crops if your ground is workable. Taurus moons are excellent for root crops and okay for above ground food & flowers. I’ve got onion and lettuce seeds going in! #GardenSky #GardenWitch

March arrives with an early warmth that almost instantly greens the land. I am feverishly hoping for stone fruit this summer after our valley lost all its crops last year due to late freezes. Nothing is foreseeable anymore, but there is sunshine and birdsong and a fresh month to wade into.

January 20th is the Eve of St. Agnes’ feast day, and was considered to be one of the prime nights for love divination. There were a number of rituals one could undertake before dreaming of their future lover/spouse such as fasting, walking backwards to bed, or sowing seeds in the dark.

Look to fruits and vegetables for winter weather forecasts - sure, why not?

“Onion skin's very thin,
mild winter comin' in.
Onion skin's thick and tough,
comin' winter, cold and rough.”

Apple skin and corn husks also are thought to 'thicken' if a hard winter is in store.

"To see the dingy cloud come drooping down, obscuring everything, one might have thought that Nature lived hard by, and was brewing on a large scale." - Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

It’s the time of deep gloom in the valley. Strong coffee, good books, and hearty meals are how we keep going.

Just a small taste, for our first snow in the southern interior of British Columbia.
