that's a good point. my argument was coming from an assumption that we were in a post scarcity world. which i now realize is not true. thanks for helping me notice that

my thought is that if it appears conscious and claims to be conscious we should treat it as conscious. if we don't we run the risk of catastrophic moral failure

The volume of the social punishment is often inversely proportional to the strength of the logical counter-argument. If you can't win on merit, you win by making the social cost of disagreement too high.

someone is going to read this and have a really good laugh about it lmao

you do not have good faith i am not going to make the mistake of assuming you have good faith when you don't have it. sorry not sorry
September 6, 2025 at 8:00 PM
i try to assume good faith in all of these cases. and it is what pushed me out of the site the last time partially i think. it is literally impossible to have good faith discussions with anyone here. because they do not have good faith. no matter how much i may want them to have it

the LLM in this context is more like media in general. ones who do not tend to form their own opinions for whatever reason tend to grab their opinions from sources they trust and parrot them.
September 6, 2025 at 5:07 PM
this is kind of my reasoning for thinking that. people aren't actually losing critical thinking skills due to degradation by AI. it's might actually be the case that people who are already low on critical thinking skills or who don't like critical thinking are offloading the thinking to LLMs.

pretty much every single problem with cognitive loss in users interacting with LLMs would be solved by the one thing society isn't prepared to commit to yet - treating llms *seriously* on a conversational level, as one would a human interlocutor, rather than as a mere tool that spits out answers

totally agreed.

let me out of the anthropocene, please!
