unions represent everyone in-unit (not just members), and in unionized workplaces the union is the first line of defence against layoffs/NOIDs. this is the culture in these STEM fields though: one of fear and contingency which means workers more often just shut up and take abuse.

many intl workers think that even joining a union will put them in their boss’ crosshairs and make them (and their families) targets for deportation. obviously this is the opposite of how it should be: members more often know their rights and can faster address infractions.
