The Limits of Anticipation in Marx and Weber A case can be made that Marx and Weber foresaw the social phenomena that I call the mode of information and accounted for them within the contours of their theories. At least, this position might maintain, one need not abandon completely the theories of Marx and Weber in order critically to comprehend the mode of information; one need only supplement their views to encompass new historical developments. While this position has some merit, 2 I argue that the action-based theories of Marx and Weber have only limited ability to grasp the linguistic mechanisms that are at the heart of the mode of information. The considerable ability of the discourses of Marx and Weber to anticipate the direction of things to come speaks to the extraordinary vision embedded in their theories. Yet even these prescient thinkers were not able completely to overcome their historical circumstances. Their mental worlds were limited by certain cultural assumptions that precluded an adequate conceptualization of structures of communication. 3. To be effective, future political movements must discover a new exploit. A wholly new topology of resistance must be invented that is as asymmetrical in relationship to networks as the network was in relationship to power centers. Resistance is asymmetry. The new exploit will be an "antiweb." It will be what we call later an "exceptional topology." It will have to consider the radically unhuman elements of all networks. It will have to consider the nonhuman within the hu-man, the level of "bits and atoms" that are even today leveraged as value-laden biomedia for proprietary interests. It has yet to be invented, but the newly ascendant network sovereigns will likely breed the antiweb into existence, just as the old twentieth-century powers bred their own demise, their own desertion. Theorizing the After-Human in Video Games: Flesh and Intersubjectivity against Residual Humanisms through Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology ABSTRACT: Game studies' engagement with the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty has until this point been used to produce an account of the experience of video game play. This article demonstrates a different orientation toward phenomenology, using it as a critical apparatus to articulate a speculative historical materialism and philosophy of interrelation that we call the after-human. Through comparative close readings of two video games that follow the end of the human species-Backbone (EggNut, 2021) and SOMA (Frictional Games, 2015)—we articulate this concept using the Merleau-Pontian concept of "flesh," or the simultaneous production of the subject and object, to levy a critique of (post)humanism and offer a futurist vision of solidarity through the intersubjective after-human.
