And even while conducting the transplant, a few hours later, Dr Todurov could hear and feel the explosions of the Russian drones and missiles around him. "Surgeries need to be conducted with precision; you need attention, focus, and we are doing this with explosions around us," he said.

A video made by Todurov shows their vehicle dodging explosions as Ukrainian air defenses fought off Russian drones. "On our way, we saw a lot of drones, and buildings that they targeted that were on fire," he said.

“Two of my children – my 19-year-old son and my 22-year-old daughter – died on the spot. I lost consciousness and my youngest daughter was severely injured. My 14-year-old son, Mykhailo, sustained a concussion, but he dragged us out of the vehicle,” she says.

Mark survived the attack thanks to his mother’s quick thinking and protection, but he has endured injuries and a trauma that will take many years to heal. He suffered from fractures to his skull, a crushed nose and injuries that have left him blind in one eye.

But that wasn’t enough to save them when a Shahed drone—the size of a small car—hit their house. Mark’s grandparents were injured, and his mum was killed, but even in death she was curled protectively around Mark, saving his life, his father described.

On night of May 18, Mark’s town came under massive Russian attack, dramatically changing the course of his life. His family hid in a room they believed was the safest, removed by at least two walls from the exterior of the house – a rule Ukrainians have learned to stay alive.
