Speaking of airships in JRPGs, nowadays airships are such a common trope that if an RPG has a traditional world map people expect you'll eventually gain the ability to fly, so I was amused reading this old Dragon Quest 3 interview earlier where the ability to fly on the map was considered a spoiler.
