I think it's an all right movie but that was my read, too. I just watched all of Heckerling's films and was surprised to be a bit more taken with her next film, Loser, which was a critical and commercial flop but a movie that deals with young people in a realer and more relatable way.

Not exaaaaaaactly this but I would recommend "If It Sounds Like A Quack" by Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling. Very good overview of American fringe medicine and how it gets people.
